Republican candidate arrested for allegedly stealing ballots

Larry Lee Savage Jr., a former Republican 5th Congressional District candidate, turned himself in to authorities after being charged with stealing ballots during a public test of voting machines in Madison County. Savage, who was elected as a precinct committeeman, was participating in a voting machine test when he was caught on surveillance folding and pocketing two ballots. The missing ballots were found in his car, one filled out as a straight Republican ballot and the other blank.

Savage claimed he thought the ballots weren’t real, but texted a fellow attendee about the ballots he took after the test. Authorities issued an arrest warrant for one count of destroying or misplacing a ballot and one count of theft. A representative for the voting machines’ manufacturer described the incident as “sabotage of the public test and their voting equipment.”

Savage ran in the Indiana 5th Congressional District Republican primary in May, winning only 2% of the vote. He describes himself as a “MAGA candidate” on social media. The state GOP spokesperson condemned Savage’s actions, stating they unequivocally condemn any form of criminal election interference.

Savage has not yet been scheduled for an initial appearance and does not have a defense attorney listed. The situation is being closely monitored by law enforcement as the legal process unfolds.
