Steve Bannon Released from Prison Ahead of Election, Vows to Continue Political Battle
Steve Bannon, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, was released from a low-security prison in Danbury, Connecticut on Tuesday, after serving a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress. His release comes just one week before a crucial U.S. presidential election in which Trump is set to face Vice President Kamala Harris.
Bannon, 70, characterized his time in prison as that of a "political prisoner," targeting Attorney General Merrick Garland, Harris, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi during a news conference. “I am far from broken,” he declared, expressing a renewed sense of empowerment. Bannon, known for his role as a chief strategist for Trump in 2017, quickly resumed hosting his “War Room” podcast, reinforcing his commitment to supporting Trump and criticizing the opposition.
Convicted in 2022 for defying a subpoena from the House committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack, Bannon had predicted turmoil following the election results. Despite his conviction being upheld by a federal appeals court, he contended he acted on the advice of his legal counsel, maintaining he had no criminal intent.
Bannon’s release aligns with a broader trend, as he shares a fate with other Trump associates like Peter Navarro, who also faced imprisonment for similar charges. Currently, Bannon is also battling additional criminal fraud charges tied to alleged deceitful fundraising for Trump’s proposed U.S.-Mexico border wall, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
As Trump gears up for the forthcoming election, Bannon’s return to the political landscape promises to amplify Trump’s messaging and challenge the current administration’s policies.
