Pursue a STEM Degree for High-Paying Career Opportunities

Press Release: Embracing STEM Education for a Brighter Future in Hawaii

HONOLULU (KHON2) – In an era where science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) hold the keys to lucrative careers, experts are urging students in Hawaii to explore these fields. Dr. Michael Ferguson, a mathematics professor at Windward Community College, emphasized the financial benefits of pursuing a STEM degree during a recent interview with KHON2.com.

"STEM majors generally earn significantly higher salaries," Dr. Ferguson stated, asserting that for those seeking high-paying jobs, STEM is the way to go. He described STEM as a broad range of disciplines, highlighting that foundational studies in chemistry, biology, and physics can greatly enhance career prospects while offering numerous job opportunities.

Notably, Dr. Ferguson pointed out that while specialized fields like oceanography and geology have value, they may be less versatile compared to broader disciplines such as civil or chemical engineering. Careers in mechanical engineering, for instance, can yield annual salaries ranging from $60,000 to $120,000, depending on specialty and experience. He also underscored the rising demand for cybersecurity professionals due to increasing digital threats.

Dr. Ferguson addressed the challenges students face in STEM education, particularly relating to mathematics, which many start to dislike in high school. He stressed the importance of real-world applications in these subjects to maintain student interest, suggesting that practical demonstrations can transform perceived boring topics into engaging learning experiences.

For students aspiring to enter the STEM fields, Dr. Ferguson recommended taking advanced math and science courses in high school. Involvement in STEM-related extracurricular activities is also essential to bolster their profiles.

Dr. Ferguson concluded by urging parents and guardians to encourage their children to explore STEM careers. "It’s not just about the money; it’s about making a difference in the world," he asserted, emphasizing the vast potential that lies ahead for Hawaii’s youth in the STEM arena.
