Press Release: Residents of Kalihi Public Housing Fear for Safety Amid Rising Crime
KALIHI, Hawaii (KHON2) — Concerns over safety have intensified in the public housing complexes of Kalihi, where residents report witnessing frequent illegal activities and escalating violence. Many fear retaliation for voicing their concerns, leading to a climate of fear that deters them from enjoying their own homes.
Incidents of violence, including multiple shootings, have raised alarm bells in the Kuhio Park Towers (KPT) community. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, "No, I don’t feel safe," highlighting a terrifying encounter where an individual brandished a gun at his son despite the presence of security. This resident has reported numerous incidents to management, but instead of improvement, he claims conditions have deteriorated, citing vandalism and threats following his complaints.
Rep. Sonny Ganaden (D) addressed the issue, criticizing the management by The Michaels Organization for its slow response to resident concerns. "We are hoping they are much more proactive in the future," Ganaden said, emphasizing the need for accountability from housing authorities.
Wider safety concerns extend beyond KPT, as residents of Kam IV housing echo similar frustrations, citing drug activity and persistent disturbances without adequate management action. One Kam IV resident described the area as “not safe for me and my family," underscoring the urgent need for reform.
Both KPT and Kam IV residents share a common hope: for meaningful change and improved conditions. In light of the rising crime rates, KHON2 has reached out to the Hawaii Public Housing Authority and The Michaels Organization for a response.
Residents are encouraged to report crimes to local authorities, and Rep. Ganaden invites those feeling neglected by management to contact his office for assistance with serious safety concerns.
