Maui couple celebrates major victories as their show ‘Shogun’ wins 18 Emmys

Maui native Rachel Kondo and her husband Justin Marks had a night to remember at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, as their series “Shogun” made history by winning a total of 18 Emmys. The American series, based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell, took home awards for best drama series, best actor in a drama (Hiroyuki Sanada), and best actress (Anna Sawai), making them the first Japanese actors to win in those categories.

Kondo, who grew up in Pukalani and graduated from Maui High School, and Marks were also named this year’s Hawaii International Film Festival 44 Career Achievement Award honorees. They will be in Hawaii on Oct. 11 for “Shogun: An Evening with Showrunners Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo” at Consolidated Kahala.

Other highlights of the Emmys included “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” winning best scripted variety series, Richard Gadd winning best actor in a limited series for “Baby Reindeer,” and “Hacks” upsetting last season’s winner “The Bear” to win best comedy.

With the success of “Shogun” and their achievements at the Emmys, Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks are being celebrated as talented creators in the entertainment industry. Their series has not only broken records but also showcased the talents of Japanese actors on a global stage.
