European People’s Party refutes claims of communication with prosecutor regarding misuse of funds

The largest group in the European Parliament, the European People’s Party (EPP), is facing allegations of misuse of EU funds in Belgium by its members. The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) has confirmed an ongoing investigation into these allegations, although the EPP has denied being approached by Belgian authorities or any law enforcement agency regarding the matter. The EPPO stated that at this stage, there are no suspects in the investigation and it does not comment on ongoing cases to protect the integrity of the process.

The EPP Group has stated that it is fully cooperating with the EPPO and any other investigative authorities, should they seek information from them. The EPPO’s mission is to combat fraud against the EU’s finances, giving it the authority to investigate and prosecute crimes that impact the EU’s financial interests, including the misuse of funds by members of the European Parliament.

Media reports have linked the ongoing probe to the EPP, but the party maintains that it has not been officially notified of any investigation. The EPPO is taking a cautious approach by not disclosing details of its investigations to avoid compromising any potential outcomes. The situation highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in the handling of EU funds by political groups within the European Parliament.
