HONOLULU (KHON2) – A new law aimed at enhancing consumer protection for airline travelers has officially come into effect, ensuring passengers can obtain automatic refunds under specific circumstances. The measure, initiated by the US Department of Transportation, provides a framework for airlines to issue refunds in a timely manner for canceled or significantly delayed flights.

The law stipulates that airline passengers will receive refunds if their flights are canceled or delayed by three hours or more for domestic flights, and six hours for international flights. Refunds must now be processed within seven business days if the fare was paid by credit card, and within 20 calendar days for other payment methods. Previously, airlines had no set timeframe for issuing refunds, leading to prolonged struggles for many customers.

Travelers have responded positively to the new regulations, highlighting the increased accountability for airlines. "Who wouldn’t think so?" remarked Linda Matsumoto, a frequent traveler. Jo Schlesinger echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that airlines should be held accountable when they fall short of their own service standards.

In addition to flight cancellations and delays, the law mandates refunds for services not provided—such as in-flight WiFi or entertainment—and baggage fees must be reimbursed for any luggage that is not delivered within 12 hours after arrival.

While exceptions exist, such as for travelers who choose to remain with the same airline despite delays, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) has heralded the measure as a crucial step for building trust between consumers and businesses. "Trust is the oil that makes that engine run," said Dale Dixon from the BBB, reinforcing the importance of transparency in consumer transactions.

This law marks a significant win for consumers, fostering a more reliable travel experience as they navigate the complexities of air travel.
