Attorney General’s Top 10 Strategies for Safeguarding Hawaii Against Wildfires

Hawaii Prioritizes Wildfire Preparedness Amid Growing Concerns

In a legislative hearing on Tuesday, Hawaii officials outlined ten critical priorities aimed at enhancing the state’s wildfire mitigation efforts, with the reinstatement of a state fire marshal’s office and guidance from mainland policies topping the list. These priorities emerge from the second phase of the Attorney General’s “Lahaina Fire Incident Analysis Report,” released in September, and come in response to Governor Josh Green’s call for actionable wildfire measures following devastating fires.

Attorney General Anne Lopez emphasized the urgent need for Hawaii to adopt effective wildfire policies demonstrated in other states, highlighting that a multidisciplinary approach is essential to tackle the complex factors contributing to fire risks in Hawaii. Among the outlined priorities is the reinstatement of a fire marshal’s office, which was dismantled in 1979. However, concerns regarding insufficient funding (only $172,000 allocated against a required $1.2 million) could impede recruitment efforts for this crucial position.

The additional priorities encompass a broad range of strategies, including improved wildfire education, communication systems, utility risk reduction, fire weather forecasting, evacuation protocols, and robust vegetation management practices. Notably, there is a growing consensus that large out-of-state landowners need targeted education to mitigate fire risks.

Lawmakers from various districts have echoed the necessity for improved building codes that consider wildfire-prone areas, but Lopez noted existing challenges, like the state housing crisis, that complicate these efforts. The Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization (HWMO) has been at the forefront of wildfire prevention for over two decades and is seen as pivotal for future educational initiatives, calling for the state to provide consistent funding.

As Hawaii braces for the forthcoming 2025 legislative session, officials stress that immediate discussions and actions are essential to safeguard communities from impending wildfire threats.
