World leaders and international aid organizations have expressed concern over the potential impact on aid delivery in Gaza following the Israeli parliament’s vote to ban the UN Relief and Works Agency (Unrwa). UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres emphasized the importance of Unrwa and called on Israel to uphold its obligations under international law.
The legislation, set to take effect within 90 days, could lead to Unrwa’s closure in East Jerusalem and hinder aid deliveries to Gaza. Leaders from countries like the UK, Germany, Australia, Spain, Slovenia, Ireland, Norway, and Belgium have condemned the ban, warning of its implications on humanitarian aid.
The US State Department also expressed deep concern over the legislation, noting Unrwa’s critical role in providing aid to Gaza. Humanitarian groups such as Oxfam and ActionAid have also denounced the move, highlighting the potential impact on vital services in the region.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the legislation, citing concerns over Unrwa workers’ involvement in terrorist activities. He emphasized the need to prevent a humanitarian crisis in Gaza and pledged to work with international partners to ensure aid continues without threatening Israel’s security.
Meanwhile, in Lebanon, Israeli raids in Baalbek resulted in at least 60 casualties, escalating tensions in the region. The UN has launched an investigation into Israeli claims against Unrwa staff. The situation underscores the complex dynamics and humanitarian challenges facing the Middle East.
