Ballot Boxes in Oregon and Washington Set on Fire; Investigations Underway
PORTLAND, OR – Early Monday morning, police reported two incidents of arson involving ballot boxes near the Oregon-Washington border, prompting investigations from both local law enforcement and the FBI.
The first incident occurred in Portland, Oregon, at approximately 3:30 a.m., when an incendiary device was placed inside a ballot box, igniting a fire. Fortunately, security personnel at the Multnomah County Elections Division promptly extinguished the flames, resulting in minimal damage. Only three ballots were affected, and election officials have assured those voters they will receive replacement ballots. "We have multiple systems and security measures in place to ensure your ballot is safe," said Tim Scott, the Multnomah County Elections Director.
Around 4 a.m., officers in Vancouver, Washington responded to a similar situation involving another ballot box that was smoking. Upon arrival, officers discovered a suspicious device next to the burning ballot box. The fire was put out, and the Metro Explosive Disposal Unit safely handled the device. While the extent of damage to ballots is still unknown, authorities are actively investigating the incident.
The Portland Fire Investigations Unit is looking into the Portland fire, while the FBI is involved in the Vancouver case. Investigators are exploring the possibility that the two incidents may be connected, although no definitive links have been established at this time.
Both incidents raise significant concerns regarding election security, as officials emphasize their commitment to ensuring the integrity and safety of ballots. As investigations continue, authorities are urging anyone with information regarding these arsons to come forward.
