Kauai Island Utility Cooperative Recognized for Energy Management Excellence
LIHUE — Scott Sato, Energy Services Supervisor at Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC), represented the cooperative at the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) World Energy Conference and Expo in Nashville, Tennessee, on September 24. During the event, he accepted the prestigious Institutional Energy Management award on behalf of KIUC, highlighting the cooperative’s commitment to renewable energy initiatives.
Sato, who also holds the position of vice president for the AEE-Hawaii Chapter, was honored alongside industry leaders and innovators focused on advancing energy solutions. The award was nominated by the AEE Hawaii Chapter in recognition of KIUC’s dedication to achieving substantial renewable energy goals through innovative projects on Kauai Island.
Russ Koehller, president of the AEE Hawaii Chapter and Certified Energy Manager, praised KIUC’s accomplishments. "Their hard work and innovation have allowed them to reach remarkable milestones in delivering renewable energy to customers," Koehller stated.
For the fifth consecutive year in 2023, KIUC has led Hawaii in renewable generation, achieving an impressive 57.9% of its energy mix from renewable sources. This significant commitment has resulted in KIUC recording the lowest residential electricity rates among all Hawaiian islands, a trend expected to continue from May 2022 through July 2024.
The Association of Energy Engineers is a nonprofit organization with over 17,000 members across 125 countries, dedicated to promoting the scientific and educational interests of energy professionals and advocating for sustainable development practices in the energy industry. KIUC’s recognition underscores its role as a leader in renewable energy innovation and sustainability in Hawaii.
