HONOLULU (KHON2) – The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) provided additional details about an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Sunday night in Waipahu. The incident began with officers responding to a call for a domestic incident involving a 23-year-old male and a female. The two individuals had been arguing, and the female wanted the male to leave the residence.
As the male was leaving, a second female followed him and appeared to hit him with a walking stick. Shortly after, an 18-year-old male emerged from a driveway with a machete and attacked the 23-year-old. Despite repeated commands from officers, the 18-year-old continued to slash at the victim, prompting an officer to shoot him in the torso.
The 18-year-old suspect was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, released from the hospital, and remains in custody under medical care. The 23-year-old victim, who sustained defensive wounds to his arm, was arrested on suspicion of abuse of a family member. The officers involved in the incident, both with significant tenure in the department, were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
Chief Logan confirmed that the female who requested the male to leave did not show signs of abuse. The incident highlights the dangers that officers face in responding to domestic incidents and the split-second decisions they must make to protect themselves and others.
