Michael Gove Opens Up About the Emotional Impact of Personal Attacks on Ex-Wife Sarah Vine

Former Tory minister and MP Michael Gove has opened up about the most hurtful part of his political career, revealing that the attacks on his former wife, Daily Mail columnist Sarah Vine, were particularly painful. In extracts from a new BBC podcast hosted by Gove, he recounted how in 2016, an email from Vine offering advice inadvertently ended up being leaked to the media. This incident occurred at a time when Gove was expected to support Boris Johnson’s bid to become Conservative leader to replace David Cameron. Vine’s email advised Gove to hold back on supporting Johnson until there was a specific offer of a cabinet job. However, Gove unexpectedly entered the leadership race himself, leading to Johnson pulling out.

Gove described the ordeal as difficult, especially as Vine was unfairly compared to Lady Macbeth in the media. He expressed his pain at seeing someone close to him being drawn into attacks meant for him, calling it particularly hurtful. Gove, who edited the Spectator after stepping down as an MP before the July general election, held various cabinet posts from 2010. Unfortunately, his Surrey Heath constituency was lost to the Liberal Democrats in the election. Surviving Politics with Michael Gove features Gove discussing the personal toll of such attacks with former politician Peter Mandelson, highlighting the emotional impact of misunderstandings and collateral damage in political attacks.
