The upcoming presidential election on Nov. 5 will feature former President Donald Trump running against Vice President Kamala Harris. After the election, it may take several days to determine the results, especially if mail-in ballots play a significant role. In late November, Trump is scheduled to be sentenced in a hush money case in Manhattan, where he was found guilty of falsifying documents. Electors will meet on Dec. 17 to select the president and vice president, with electoral votes due by Christmas. On Jan. 6, the Electoral College vote count will take place, with the vice president – currently Harris – announcing the results. In 2021, then-President Trump criticized Vice President Mike Pence for not intervening in the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory, leading to an attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters. A new law now requires a higher threshold for challenging state election results in Congress. The official inauguration of the election winner and their vice president will take place on Jan. 20.
