Is Musk’s daily $1 million giveaway considered election interference? | News on Elections

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced a $1m giveaway every day until election day on November 5 to randomly selected registered voters who sign a petition to support the constitution, launched by his pro-Donald Trump America Political Action Committee (PAC). The scheme has raised legal concerns and Pennsylvania’s Democratic governor has called for an investigation into potential election interference.

Musk’s giveaway will run from October 17 to November 5, with $1m awarded daily to a registered voter from swing states who signs the petition on the America PAC website. Musk, who supports Trump and owns Tesla, SpaceX, and X, has a net worth of $274.4bn.

The petition specifically affirms support for the First and Second Amendments of the US Constitution. Critics have raised concerns about the legality of the giveaway, as federal law prohibits paying individuals to register or vote. Legal experts have questioned the PAC’s requirement for voter registration to be eligible for the $1m prize.

Musk’s involvement in politics has grown since creating America PAC in May to support Trump’s election bid this year. While Musk initially supported Democratic candidates, his relationship with the party soured during Biden’s presidency. Musk’s giveaway aims to raise awareness for the PAC petition and has already seen two $1m prize winners. However, questions remain about the legality and ethics of the scheme, prompting calls for further investigation by law enforcement.
