Announcement of honorees at the film festival


The 2024 Hawai‘i International Film Festival recently announced its awards at the Halekulani Hotel, with local director Alika Tengan’s film “Moloka‘i Bound” taking home two top prizes. The film, which tells the story of a Native Hawaiian man’s journey to reconnect with his family and community after prison, received the Kau Ka Hoku Grand Jury Award and the Made in Hawai‘i Jury Award for best narrative feature.

Other honorees included “CHamoru: A Lost Language” for the HIFF Best Short Film Award, “We Were Dangerous” for Best Feature Film at the Pasifika Awards, and “Sister Midnight” for the NETPAC Award for Best Feature Film. “Standing Above the Clouds” also received recognition in multiple categories, as well as student film “Stitches” winning the BMW Driven Student Award.

The HIFF44 Awards Gala also honored industry veterans such as Stanley Nelson and Temuera Morrison, while showcasing emerging talents like Charles Yu and Sandra Ng. The festival will continue its screenings on Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Waimea, and Hilo on the Big Island until Nov. 10.
