African American Women in Harvard Program


Fenika Miller, a community activist from Georgia, participated in the Power, Innovation, and Leadership executive education program at Harvard University in April 2023. Deborah Barfield Berry reported that April England-Albright, the national legal director of Black Voters Matter, led a rendition of “I’m Every Woman” at a dinner event at the Kennedy School during the program. Deborah Scott, the executive director of Georgia STAND-UP, discussed an assignment with a classmate, while Julie Battilana, a professor at Harvard, led discussions with the participants in April 2024. Barbara Perkins and Julie Battilana chatted after a dinner event at Harvard’s Kennedy School, and Deborah Scott interacted with other participants in the program designed for Black women leading organizations in the South. Monica Simpson and other participants were seen listening to instructors during a session of the program. The women leaders from the South were engaged in a power-building pilot program at Harvard University, led by Professor Battilana, which included exercises and discussions aimed at developing their leadership skills. The program was designed to empower Black women leaders and provide them with the tools and knowledge to advance their organizations and communities.
