A recent monthly analysis of water quality on Kauai found high concentrations of enterococcus bacterium in several streams, rivers, and surf spots around the island. The Surfrider Foundation’s Blue Water Task Force collected water samples from 21 sites, with Hanamaulu Stream showing the highest levels of contamination in October.
While eight sites met Hawaii’s single-day sample standard for acceptable bacteria levels, thirteen sites fell below the mark. The task force noted that pollution in Hanalei Bay was due to runoff from the Hanalei River and surrounding streams, while Makua Stream at Tunnels Beach also showed high concentrations of bacteria.
Several sites have consistently tested above the mean bacteria concentration mark, leading to caution signs being posted to warn the public about high bacteria levels in the water. One such site, Nawiliwili Stream at Kalapaki Bay Beach, has been consistently polluted since 2010 and was deemed the most chronically polluted waters in the nation in Surfrider’s annual report.
The Surfrider Foundation continues to monitor water quality at various locations on Kauai, working in collaboration with local authorities to ensure public safety. The data collected serves as a valuable tool for identifying and addressing pollution sources to protect the island’s waterways and beaches.
