Search for survivors underway following the tragic death of 7 individuals in Georgia dock collapse

At least seven people were killed and multiple others injured after part of a boat dock collapsed during a celebration of Sapelo Island’s Gullah-Geechee community in Georgia. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, with at least 20 individuals falling into the Atlantic waters off the coast of Georgia. The U.S. Coast Guard conducted search and rescue operations throughout the night for missing persons.

The collapse occurred on a crowded gangway as people waited for a ferryboat to the barrier island, which is only accessible by boat and is home to a historic Black community of descendants of former enslaved people. The annual festival, Cultural Day, celebrates the island’s unique cultural heritage and the Gullah-Geechee people who have preserved much of their African heritage due to their isolation.

Coast Guard helicopters and boats equipped with sonar were deployed to search for survivors, but the cause of the accident was not immediately clear. The state-run ferry takes about 20 minutes to reach Sapelo Island from the mainland, and the community is one of several surviving island communities from Georgia to North Carolina.

Authorities expressed their condolences and stated that their thoughts and prayers were with all those affected by the tragedy, including the entire Sapelo Island Community. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of crowded docks and the importance of safety measures during large events.
