Billionaire Elon Musk has announced that he will give away $1 million each day until the November election to someone who signs his online petition. The first prize was awarded at an event supporting Republican Donald Trump, raising questions about the legality of the payments. Musk handed a $1 million check to a man named John Dreher at the America PAC event in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, without Dreher’s prior knowledge. The money is part of Musk’s efforts to influence the presidential race, with his political action organization, America PAC, supporting Trump’s campaign.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has expressed concern about the legality of Musk’s cash payments to voters, as federal law prohibits paying people to induce or reward them to vote or register. Musk’s events in Pennsylvania are aimed at mobilizing voters in battleground states and encouraging early voting. He warns that a win by Vice President Kamala Harris would be “the last election” and points to two assassination attempts against Trump as evidence that he is shaking up the status quo.
Attendees of Musk’s events are required to sign his petition supporting the First and Second Amendments, which allows America PAC to collect contact details for potential voters. Musk has already provided at least $75 million to America PAC, making it a crucial part of Trump’s re-election campaign. Despite facing questions about the legality of his actions, Musk continues to support Republican causes and openly endorse Trump for president. Trump has even suggested that he would appoint Musk to lead a government efficiency commission if re-elected.
