Georgians Unite in Protest for EU Membership Before Elections

The European Union has frozen Georgia’s accession talks after the passing of a controversial ‘foreign influence law’ by the government earlier this year. In response, tens of thousands of Georgians attended a pro-Europe rally ahead of parliamentary elections, which are seen as a crucial test for the country’s democracy and its bid for EU membership. The ruling Georgian Dream party has been accused of authoritarianism and derailing Georgia’s path to Europe.

Pro-Western President Salome Zurabichvili joined the rally, emphasizing the people’s desire for freedom, independence, and a European future. Participants waved EU and Georgian flags, carrying banners that read “Georgia chooses the European Union.” Several NGOs called for the mass demonstration to show unity and commitment to EU membership.

The adoption of the ‘foreign influence law’ prompted mass protests and US sanctions against Georgian officials, leading to the EU freezing Georgia’s accession process. Foreign policy chief Josep Borrell warned of authoritarian shifts and highlighted the upcoming elections as a crucial test for democracy.

Opinion polls suggest that opposition parties may form a coalition government after Saturday’s elections, challenging the ruling party’s grip on power. There are concerns of potential turmoil if Georgian Dream refuses to relinquish power. Despite initial pro-Western policies, the party has been accused of moving closer to Moscow in recent years, straying from Georgia’s aspirations for EU and NATO membership supported by the majority of the population.
