A teenage kayaker was rescued off the coast of Oahu South Shore after going missing for about 10 hours. The Honolulu Fire Department initiated a shoreline search after receiving a 911 call reporting the missing 17-year-old boy, Kahiau Kawai. The U.S. Coast Guard, Hawaii Airports Division, and off-duty lifeguard Noland Keaulana also joined the search effort. Keaulana, borrowing a boat from the Polynesian Voyaging Society, located Kawai near the Waikiki Natatorium with the help of a Coast Guard C-130 aircraft. Kawai was suffering from hypothermia, dehydration, and exhaustion but was alert and talking when rescued. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition and was later able to reunite with his family. The Kawai family expressed their gratitude to the rescue teams, friends, and Keaulana for their efforts in bringing Kawai safely back to shore. The successful rescue was attributed to the collaborative efforts of multiple agencies and individuals who worked tirelessly throughout the night. The family also thanked everyone who prayed for Kawai’s safe return. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of swift and coordinated action in emergency situations and the dedication of those who risk their lives to save others.
