Two fires broke out on the east side of Kauai amid a red flag warning on Thursday afternoon. The Kauai Fire Department responded to calls of a brush fire along Kuhio Highway in Anahola near the marketplace. Fire crews from multiple stations, along with air support and a battalion chief, worked to contain the fire. A second fire was reported near Kalalea Road, separate from the marketplace fire. Kuhio Highway was temporarily closed as firefighters worked to control the fires and protect nearby homes.
The fires were brought under control by 3:45 p.m. with the Kauai Emergency Management Agency (KEMA) monitoring the area for any hot spots. Air support remained on standby to assist if needed. The quick response by the fire department helped prevent further spread of the fires and protected the local community. The cause of the fires is still under investigation.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety, especially during red flag warnings when the risk of wildfires is heightened. Residents are urged to be vigilant, avoid activities that could spark fires, and report any suspicious behavior to authorities. The Kauai Fire Department continues to monitor the situation and is prepared to respond to any future incidents.
