Trump Threatens Tariffs on China in Response to Potential Taiwan Invasion

Donald Trump, the former US president and current Republican presidential candidate, has threatened to impose additional tariffs on China if they were to “go into Taiwan.” In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Trump stated that he would tax China at 150% to 200% in such a scenario.

Trump also mentioned his relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, claiming that military force would not be necessary to defend Taiwan as Xi respected him. The tension between China and Taiwan stems from China’s claim of sovereignty over the island, which Taiwan strongly opposes.

In his bid for re-election against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump has proposed blanket tariffs on imports and higher tariffs on goods from China to boost US manufacturing.

During his presidency, Trump engaged in a trade war with China through aggressive tariff implementations. He also commented on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, stating that he would have prevented it if he were in office, citing a past interaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

These statements from Trump highlight his tough stance on foreign policy and trade issues as he seeks to win support from voters ahead of the upcoming election.
