Teen shares harrowing tale of surviving 11 hours in Waikiki waters

A teenage kayaker from the Kamehameha Schools kayak team in Hawaii shared his incredible survival story after spending the night in the waters of Waikiki when his kayak capsized. Kahiau Kawai, 17, recounted his experience of drifting five miles offshore, calling for help, and eventually getting rescued by Uncle Noland Keaulana with the help of the U.S. Coast Guard. Kawai used his kayak as a kickboard to try and make his way back to shore, all while battling the relentless current. He expressed his gratitude to his uncle, the Honolulu Fire Department, and the Coast Guard for their roles in his rescue.

Kawai emphasized the importance of staying calm and focusing on survival during such a challenging situation. He reflected on feeling alone, cold, and relieved when the sun finally rose. Despite the harrowing ordeal, Kawai’s determination and ability to think clearly helped him navigate through the difficult circumstances until he was eventually rescued. The teenager’s resilience and the help of experienced watermen and emergency responders played key roles in ensuring his safe return to shore. Kawai’s story serves as a reminder of the dangers of the open ocean and the importance of being prepared and staying calm in critical situations.
