The Defence Ministers of the G7 countries met in Naples, Italy to reaffirm their unity and support for Ukraine amidst escalating conflicts in the Middle East and Russia’s war in Ukraine. The ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States expressed their determination to address security challenges during a time marked by great instability.
During the meeting, the G7 ministers declared their unwavering support for Ukraine and their intent to continue providing military assistance in the short and long term. Italy’s Defence Minister highlighted the deteriorating security framework globally, citing Russian aggression in Ukraine and instability in the Middle East, Africa, and the Indo-Pacific region.
The joint declaration also condemned Iran’s ballistic missiles and large-scale attacks against Israel while emphasizing the importance of all parties acting in accordance with international law. Concerns over threats to UNIFIL’s security in Lebanon were also raised, with the G7 ministers stressing the need for the protection of peacekeepers.
Security issues in Africa and the Asia-Pacific region were discussed during the meeting, which was attended by the High Representative of the European Union and NATO’s Secretary General. Italy, who currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the G7, will host the summit in 2024.
The G7’s message of unity and support for Ukraine comes just days after President Volodymr Zelenskyy presented his plan to end the conflict, highlighting the international community’s commitment to addressing the ongoing crises and maintaining peace and stability in the regions affected.
