Russian drone attacks kill eight at medical center in Sumy, Ukraine amidst conflict with Russia

At least eight people have died in two consecutive Russian drone attacks on a medical center in Sumy, northeastern Ukraine. The first attack killed one person, followed by another while patients and staff were evacuating. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Russia used Shahed drones in the attack, injuring eleven people. The city of Sumy is near the Russian border, where Ukraine launched an offensive in August to create a buffer zone.

The second attack took place as rescuers and police were providing assistance and evacuating patients. A volunteer group working at the scene captured the chaos in a video showing smoke, explosions, and people rushing to safety. Ukraine’s air force reported shooting down 69 out of 73 Russian drones launched overnight, as well as two missiles. In retaliation, Russia said it shot down Ukrainian drones in bordering regions.

Zelenskyy recently visited the US to seek support for Ukraine, discussing his “victory plan” with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The plan aims to strengthen Ukraine’s negotiating position to end the war on Kyiv’s terms. Biden announced $8bn in military aid for Ukraine, including Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) munitions to enhance their capabilities. The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate, leaving civilians at risk and underscoring the urgent need for international support to end the violence.
