The United States and the United Arab Emirates have strengthened their military cooperation, with President Joe Biden recognizing the UAE as a “major defense partner” following a meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This designation aims to enhance defense cooperation and security in the Middle East, East Africa, and the Indian Ocean regions through joint training and military collaboration.
Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, including Israel’s attacks on Lebanon and the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the US and UAE leaders emphasized the need for de-escalation and humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza. The UAE has been vocal in condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza and has been involved in UN Security Council resolutions against the conflict.
However, the military cooperation announcement comes despite friction over the UAE’s alleged involvement in the war in Sudan, where it has been accused of supporting the Rapid Support Forces with weapons. Both sides in the conflict have been accused of human rights abuses, leading to millions of people being displaced.
In discussions with US lawmakers and Vice President Kamala Harris, the UAE and US leaders emphasized the need for a diplomatic solution in Sudan and compliance with international humanitarian law. The US has been urged to use its leverage to seek a change in course in the Sudanese conflict.
Overall, the US-UAE military cooperation strengthens regional stability, while tensions over conflicts in Sudan and the Middle East continue to pose challenges for the two countries. The path to stabilization, recovery, and responsible governance in conflict-affected regions remains a key focus for both nations.
