UN officials, including heads of agencies such as the World Food Programme and UNICEF, have called for an end to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where nearly 300 aid workers have been killed amid ongoing violence between Israel and Hamas. They highlighted the urgent need for safe and unimpeded access to those in need, as well as the dire conditions faced by the 2.1 million residents of Gaza, many of whom are at risk of famine due to restricted humanitarian access.
The situation in Gaza has worsened with at least 24 people killed and 60 wounded in Israeli attacks, as reported by the enclave’s Health Ministry. Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud described the conditions in Gaza as desperate, with the intense bombing campaign leading to widespread destruction and suffering. The conflict, which began in October 2023, has resulted in over 41,400 deaths and mass displacement of the population, with the majority of the casualties attributed to Israeli military actions.
The heads of UN agencies stressed the need for immediate action to address the crisis in Gaza, where healthcare has been decimated and attacks on healthcare facilities have been widespread. They called on world leaders gathered at the UN General Assembly to prioritize the needs of the people of Gaza and work towards ending the violence and suffering in the region.
