The Honolulu Planning Commission is set to receive an update today on the city’s search for an alternate site for Oahu’s next municipal landfill. The city’s search is in response to a state-imposed mandate and previous Planning Commission decisions. The city has decided to no longer consider federal lands for the landfill and is now looking at privately owned properties, which may require using eminent domain to acquire a site.
The city Department of Environmental Services will present potential sites under consideration, along with the obstacles for each. The search for a new landfill site has been ongoing, with discussions held with the U.S. military for assistance in siting a new landfill on Oahu. However, federal lands have been ruled out as potential sites, and the city is exploring other options such as amending existing state laws or using eminent domain on private properties.
The city’s landfill search has been extended to December 31, 2024, with quarterly reports required to update the Planning Commission and the state Land Use Commission on the progress. The city is confident they will be able to identify a new landfill site by the deadline. The ongoing search for an alternate landfill site is crucial as the existing landfill is scheduled to close in 2028.
The Planning Commission meeting to discuss the update on the landfill search will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Fasi Municipal Building. City officials are working diligently to meet the deadline and find a suitable location for Oahu’s next municipal landfill.
